These spools haven’t been manufactured in decades and are becoming increasingly hard-to-find. You can leave them in your typewriter permanently, just re-spool fresh ribbon onto them as needed. These were made in the USA.

Vintage Smith-Corona portable manual typewriter, likely mid-20th century (circa 1940s–1950s). Tested and typing. Carriage moves smoothly and most keys strike well. Typefaces were cleaned and produce clear print (see photos). Note: the “G” key does not currently strike due to a disconnected linkage. Interior is clean and the machine appears well cared for. This was the preferred typewriter of the Luke’s of Hemingway and many more famous writers. It appears to be fully functional although it needs new ink. I also tested it briefly before the ink dried so I cannot say with 100% certainty that it is fully functional.
