On this double cassette unit both play buttons work as they should the timer works as well as the digital peak indicator as well as the regular peak level the issue it is having is on both sides. I've had good success at restoring these so far and you'll get back a super performing cassette deck that will run another 30 years. I am out of heads and exterior parts (plus motors) so if yours are found defective (very rare) you'll have to source them elsewhere.
