He hired Charles Spiro (inventor of the Columbia and of theBar-Lock typewriters) to design the Gourland typewriter. Spiro succeededin creating several patents which were included in the Gourland. Theunique features of the typewriter included weighing only 9.5 lbs, having atotal of only 625 parts and having a flip up carriage.
