It's sort of a classic "ambitious young musician's reach exceeds his/her grasp" thing; I think Tholen clearly wanted to make a big expansive progressive rock album, but was limited by his lack of resources (especially the lack of a band- cf his Bandcamp bio, "Jay Tholen is a person who can't get a real life prog/art rock band together so he makes electronic music instead.").
