Soapwort Seeds (saponaria officinalis). Perennial herb. Zone 4-8. Plant gets pretty white/pink flowers. The root has saponins which can be used as a soap substitute. It is very beneficial to refrigerate the seeds for two or three months and then scarify between sandpaper to roughen up the seed a bit to help it sprout) before planting. Sow in spring or in pots, barely covering seed, pressing securely and keep warm and in light and moist until germ, about 30 days. Thin to 1 foot apart. Flowering to 2 to 3 feet.
