A flange nut is a nut that has a wide flange at one end that acts as an integrated, non-spinning washer. These nuts have serrations on the integrated washer giving it a "locking" characteristic. Hex washer heads have 6 sides with an indented top surface and a washer that protrudes beyond the hex that increases the bearing surface as well as reducing the likelihood of crushing the mating surfaces.
