VCDs are Video Compact Discs -- an alternate video format that came before DVD and which were widely popular in a number of Asian countries. The discs used are produced on CDs, rather than DVDs, so far less information can be held on a single disc. This results in two main differences between VCDs and DVDs. First, VCDs are usually issued in two discs per film, rather than a single disc for a DVD.
