Gagaku, the oldest of Japan's performing arts, boasts a history spanning over 1000 years, making it the oldest living ensemble music in the world. Following Tadamaro Ohno's death in 1994, his nephew Tadaaki Ohno, who was born in Tokyo in 1959 and belongs to a family with a lineage tracing back to the late ninth century, took over as the music director.
