The Phaeton was intended to spearhead Volkswagen’s entry into the high-end automotive segment and rattle the German luxury car establishment by offering loyal VW owners whose salaries and aspirations have grown beyond the company’s core models, like the Golf, Jetta and Passat, a top-notch luxury sedan. The idea was to retain these customers who typically would transition to a BMW, Audi or Mercedes-Benz, while elevating the overall status of the brand. The 2006 version is indeed hitting showrooms, and noteworthy additions include a more powerful 12-cylinder engine, a four-seater package that pampers rear passengers and an optional Active Cruise Control (ACC) system available across the range. Drives like a mid-size, Drinks like a tadpole.

by ecadvocate , Nov 20, 2005
Pros: $10,000 gas savings (over 10years), ride, quietness, roomy, fast, well made, durability.
Cons: Rear visibility, vague steering, increased fuel use from heater and A/C.
The Bottom Line: Not flashy for impulse buyers. It's roomy, comfy, speedy, quality. Gets high miles per gallon, low soldiers per gallon. Psychology and politics aside, it's a great mid size car.

Review: Surprisingly Excellent
I put 5,000 miles on this car in the first 2 weeks. I filled up only 8 times while driving 65 MPH all over Arizona, Nevada and California through mountains and mostly on freeways. This car costs nothing to own and...

The car that sells itself...

by ratnarat , Dec 31, 2005
Pros: Performs as advertised, is Toyota quality, many standard features, completely ingenious, saves money
Cons: A Corolla is cheaper, requires slight skill to get 60mpg
The Bottom Line: Today's hybrids have few drawbacks. With rising gas costs, can you afford not to own one?

Review: The dealer didn't give us much of a discount on our 2006, Seaside Blue, tech package Prius. He didn't have to. The demand for the Prius right now is so unholy that the car we looked at on December 23, 2005, a silver '05 Prius, was gone when we...
