SR5, Sport, and Limited models are offered. Their liftgate includes 4Runners traditional power tailgate window. A 245-hp 4.0 liter replaces a 183-hp 3.4 as the V6 engine. 4Runners first V8 is available in all models and with 2WD or 4WD. The 4.7-liter V8 has less horsepower but more torque than the V6. Both engines use automatic transmission, the V6 a 4 speed, the V8 a new 5 speed. The V6s 4WD can be left engaged on dry pavement. V8s have all-wheel drive. Both systems include low-range gearing and 4Runners first hill descent control. New hill ascent control is standard on all models, as is a traction/antiskid system and antilock brakes, now with 4-wheel discs. SR5 has 16-inch wheels, the others have 17s. Sports have a nonfunctional hood scoop. Less

All-wheel drive and a DVD entertainment system are newly available on Americas best-selling SUV for 2003. Explorer is available with a 3rd-row seat for 7-passenger capacity and comes with a V6 or V8 engine and a 5-speed automatic transmission. Available with either engine is rear-wheel drive; Fords ControlTrac 4WD that can be left engaged on dry pavement; and, for 03, all-wheel drive. The AWD system is shared with the similar Mercury Mountaineer, and unlike ControlTrac, does not include low-range gearing. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes are standard and Fords AdvanceTrac antiskid system is optional. Explorer is among the few midsize SUVs with independent rear suspension. Torso side airbags are unavailable, but the optional head-protecting curtain side airbags cover the 1st and 2nd seating rows and are designed to deploy in side impacts and rollovers. Will Success Spoil the 2003 4Runner?

by scmrak , Feb 18, 2003
Pros: improved ride, quality construction, amenities
Cons: middling mileage, purchase price, no third seat
The Bottom Line: The breakup of the 4Runner/Tacoma marriage brings a larger and more comfortable 4Runner to the market.
This reviewer recommends this product.
Review: Among drivers who spend at least part of their time in the backcountry, the Toyota 4Runner has long had a reputation as an agile and durable off-road performer. Since its introduction in 1984, the 4Runner has been built on the same tough platform as...

Pros: Larger and roomier; great performance, better fuel economy and improved ride comfort
Cons: None
The Bottom Line: 2003 Toyota 4Runner presents its car-like comfort and improved off-road ruggedness. It's a 4th-generation SUV that's the benchmark of Toyota
This reviewer recommends this product.
Review: There is no mistake that Toyota tends to dominate the SUV market with its series of well-built SUVs that have come to be the synonym of reliability, comfort, class and superiority in engineering and design. I am not writing the review of this...

Ford's Explorer Sport Trac (Or Should I say Ranger Sport Trac?): Average at Best

by scmrak , Aug 6, 2003
Pros: attractive design, bed liner, smooth-shiftin' five speed auto
Cons: noisy, jerky ride, lousy fuel economy
The Bottom Line: Sport Trac attempts to be both passenger car and pickup truck but does neither well. Comparison with its competitors would be improved by updated suspension and cabin soundproofing.
This reviewer recommends this product.
Review: A regrettable side effect of the rising costs of buying and owning a vehicle is that it's no longer economically feasible to keep around a "beater" for special occasions. Where many of my neighbors once kept a rattletrap pickup on hand for their...
