Back in the early days, all I needed were two USB ports, one for the keyboard and one for the mouse. Then not long after I needed two more ports, one for the new printer, and one for the scanner. My computer only has 4 ports in the back, so they were filled at this point.

I purchased my DLink USB hub last month (feb) to use with my computer since I had 4 usb ports on my computer which were not enough. I usually have about 6-8 needing to be hooked up. it was getting to be a pain to change out ALOT. So I bought this nifty hub for about $25 at newegg.
