The Canon EF lens is a highly practical telephoto lens that offers superb delineation and portability. With an 85 mm f/1.8 lens aperture and 85 mm focal length, subjects are brought closer, creating excellent blurs, giving a longer flash range, and affording a faster shutter speed to freeze the action. In addition, the Canon camera lens provides images that are sharp and clear at all apertures. Through computer simulations, the Canon EF lens illuminates beautiful background blurs. Since the front lens group on this telephoto lens does not rotate during focusing, special filter effects are not affected. With a powerful ring-type ultra-sonic monitor (USM) and fast 85 mm f/1.8 lens aperture, the subjects of this Canon camera lens zip into focus in the viewfinder. With inner focusing and full-time manual focus, this Canon camera lens is ideal for all types of word calling for moderate telephoto power. Users appreciate this lens and its 1/3-stop speed advantage, natural angle of view, and perspective for portraits and natural images alike. Less

Pros Great Image Quality; Light-Weight; Solid Build; Auto Focus Speed; Wideness
Cons Won't Fit 35mm Cameras; Loud Auto Focus
Recommended it? Yes

At one point, I considered the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 XR Di II as a replacement for my kit lens, the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 USM Lens. I managed to borrow this lens from a friend who uses it as his primary lens on Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT. The lens ultimately did not appeal to me since I wanted... Read full review »

I was a Nikon camera user for more than 20 years until I switched to Canon digital about 4 years ago. At that time,I purchased the lenses that had the best reviews and sometimes was disappointed in my choices.

I had the Canon 17-40mm 4.0 L series lens which garnered great reviews and at... Read full review »

With Canon Portrait lenses, less can be more

bylawman67 Dec 20, 2013
13 Helpfuls 14 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Fast f/1.8 maximum aperture, good bokeh, sharp from corner to corner, fast focus, cheap
Cons Bokeh not as smooth as the pro lenses, plasticky build
Recommended it? Yes

I love portrait lenses.  On a full-frame camera these usually fall in the range of 75mm to 105mm, with 135mm lenses also often used the same way outdoors.  If I were to look at all my photos over the years, it is very likely that most of my best people shots would be from lenses in this... Great low light, superb indoor sports

bybostonshiparty Dec 28, 2012
7 Helpfuls 8 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Best lens in its class, aka medium telephoto while being a prime for SPORTS
Cons Really none worth mentioning, besides maybe lack of IS... I want IS
Recommended it? Yes

I wanted to start shooting indoor sports, specifically basketball, and non of my lenses I had at the time were up to the challenge. The canon telephoto zooms ( 70-200 ) were out of my price range, and the cheaper alternative, the F4L lense, didn't have a wide enough maximum aperture for low light... Read full review »
