Meet a thoroughly modern design that's optimized for select Canon EOS digital SLRs. Its angle of view is equivalent to a 96mm lens on a 35mm camera, with a floating optical system that can focus down to full life-size (1:1) magnification. Inner focusing, driven by a silent and powerful ring-type USM, means the lens' overall length never changes during focus. This lens is a wonderful multi-purpose lens that's equally at home shooting macro shots, portraits or available-light photos. Less

It can be used with wide variety of subjects and it is an ideal large aperture standard zoom lens for digital SLR cameras featuring APS-C size image sensor. This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 7.9" (20cm) throughout the entire zoom range. Maximum magnification of 1:2.3 enables close-up photography like a macro lens. This lens design and multi layer lens coating reduce flare and ghosting, which is a common problem with digital cameras. A Special Low Dispersion (SLD) lens and two aspherical lens elements provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations and produce a high level of optical performance throughout the entire zoom range. This lens offers a large aperture of F2.8 at 17mm wide angle and yet it is compact, with an overall length of 82.5mm (3.2") and diameter 79mm (3.1"). It performs superbly even in relatively low light conditions indoors or at dusk. The lens design incorporates an inner focusing system, which ensures fast AF speed as well as prevents the front of the lens rotating, making it particularly suitable for use with circular polarizing filters and petal shaped lens hoods. This lens is also equipped with Zoom Lock Switch that eliminates 'Zoom Creep' during transportation. Less

CANON EF-S 60mm f2.8 USM: Digital Portrait Lens!

bytheuerkorn Apr 22, 2005

Pros 1x Macro, 'fast' optics, internal focus, USM, rugged, sharp, great portrait...
Cons pricey for f2.8, less versatile than a zoom, USM sometimes confused
Recommended it? Yes

So you just got that shiny EOS 20D or Digital Rebel (XT) and while there is a great selection of EF lenses (to fit 35mm photography), the digitally optimized range of lenses is relatively small.

Starting with the cost-effective but limited kit lens (18-55mm), the need for a better lens... Read full review »

Outstanding lens for a 'pro-sumer'

Pros quality... of construction, of optics. Simply outstanding.
Cons Doesn't work with all Canon models
Recommended it? Yes

We use this lens with a Canon Digital Rebel. In fact, this lens (with its EF-S USM designation) can ONLY be used with Digital Rebel models. So, if you're using other models, look elsewhere. I believe this is a lens that Canon intends for serious-but-not-professional photographers. It has high-end... Read full review »
