The BMW 5-Series bows this new model year boasting several enhancements to both optional and standard equipment, as well as a new wagon body style. The 528 models are now available with a Sport-Premium Package, which combines the features of the Sport and Premium Packages into one. Other new features include a car and key memory system which allows individual users to tailor electronic functions to their own priorities and tastes, an infrared-reflecting windshield, and a new aluminum cylinder block for the standard 193 HP six-cylinder engine. While the recently revealed 2004 5 Series makes use of the "flame surfacing" idea favored by BMW's current head of design, the next 3 Series looks more like a smaller version of the previous 5 Series. Engine choices probably won't change all that much although the high-performance Motorsport coupe (likely renamed 4 Series) is expected to get V8 power. BMW's iDrive control system is a probable addition along with plenty of other new comfort and convenience features necessary to keep the best-selling sedan at the top of the sales charts. Less

With the 3 Series scheduled for another facelift when the 2006 model hits the showroom floors, I decided to grab some wheel time in the 2005 model. The '06 is on my short list of 'possible next cars' and I'd like to know what they've changed...

Pros: Fun Factor is a 10--great handling and also classy.
Cons: AVOID THE NAV--IT IS HORRIBLE! Tilt on steering wheel should come down lower.
The Bottom Line: BMW 3 series continues to lead the pack with the best combo of sport and class on the road
