Ford's new-generation Mustang is an amazing blend of the better of two different worlds. It looks very much like the late-‘60s Mustangs that were so popular in their day, while it drives exactly like the fully contemporary performance coupe it is. For 2005 came the ultimate accolade to those much-loved first-generation Mustangs on a substantially superior platform. It looks so much like the ‘67-'70 Mustangs at first glance that you have to look again (and know what you're looking at) to realize it's the new one. Less

Redesigned for 2005, the current-generation Ford Mustang is larger than the prior model and features styling cues that hark back to the 1967 version. Mustangs have a standard V-6 engine, but the GT holds a 300-horsepower V-8. Occupants get more space than in the previous generation. Coupes and convertibles are offered. Less

2005 Mustang: Not Conventionally Perfect, But A True Renaissance For The Mustang Name

by drive571 , Sep 15, 2004
Pros: Stunning styling inside and out, throaty-sounding V8, excellent driving position, newfound sense of substance.
Cons: Shifter and steering get the Novocain treatment, chassis sophistication still trails import rivals'.
The Bottom Line: The 2005 redesign brings massive improvements for Ford?s pony car. It offers more authentic ?60?s muscle-car flavor than previous versions, but finally feels updated to 21st-century tastes.

Review: My Experience

I recently attended the Ford Racing Innovation Drive event in Pasadena. It was held at Irwindale Speedway, and was essentially a showcase for Ford's new 2005 models--including the all-new Mustang. There were a couple...

Pros: Even more power, refinement, Improved interior quality
Cons: No exclusivity factor, interior styling with optional packages.
The Bottom Line: Finally, a Mustang I could live with.

Review: Over the past 25 some-odd years, Ford has tried desperately to make their Mustang look and perform like the original '60s fastbacks. If I only had a penny for every time Ford used the word "retro" or "nostalgic" to describe one of its new Mustangs...
