Author's Review
I've been through three cordless phones in the last five years or so.
One was an IBM 2.5 GHz that I could not always hear from unless I used a headset.
The next was a VTech 2.5 GHz phone that worked well, except the holes where the sound came out in the handset were in a weird place.
Then, along came DSL with a wireless router. Then the troubles started.
OK, I'm not picky. I can stand the interference in the phone. I'm not on the phone that much anyway.
BUT ...
Along came the interference from the phone in the wireless internet.
OK, either I find a solution or my other half will have me pull wire from the modem to her computer room.
'nuff said.
I looked to see what was available (in 900 MHz) and this is what I found.
There was one (1) review here that said the unit was a "Great phone" and that "The reception is always clear", so I went and got one.
This is the finest cordless phone I have ever used (including the one my other half ripped off from me).
Why?
Here it is (and bear in mind I am almost 57 years old and my hearing and eyesight aren't what I wished they were) ...
- It's got big buttons to dial with. Not only that, but, if you press any button, the buttons light up. This makes it much easier to dial, even with my glasses off!
- The display (which also lights up) shows you what you're dialing. You can even input the numbers (and make corrections as necessary) before you actually dial the phone.
- The volume control, conveniently located on the side of the handset, allows the user to quickly and easily adjust the volume through the four levels, i.e., Low, Medium, High and Maximum.
- There's an Audio Boost. What this does is accentuate (raise) the high frequencies and attenuate (lower) the low frequencies so those of us with increasing tinnitus can hear more easily. I actually had this work very well for me. I was using a headset that was, perhaps, not exactly right for the phone (impedance was probably off). I was talking with my Daughter last night and found I couldn't hear exceptionally well. I turned on the Audio Boost and, Viola!, I could hear like a champ!
OK, so much for the Old Folks stuff. There's more ...
- The range of this phone is adequate for my needs. I had it about 50 feet from the base last night without any problems. It'll probably go farther, but I didn't try it.
- Different from some other phones I have used, the holes in the ear section of the handset are right where they should be, The sound from the unit is as clear as what one might have experienced from real, live Ma Bell phones in the past.
- The belt clip is exceptional. I normally wear the phone on the pocket of my jeans 'cause I don't wear a belt (suspenders work very well, thank you). Other phones have fallen off when I sat down. This one stays where I put it!
- If you desire, you can place the phone in a vertical position when it's off the cradle and it will stand up very nicely (great if you have a particularly crowded side table).
- The display shows the amount of time you have been on the phone. Not that this will stop me, but at least I get a feeling of how much the call will cost.
- For those of us who still have pulse dialing (as opposed to tone dialing), it will do that as well. Also has the Tone button on the front so you can use the tones for responding to touch tone systems once you get out to the real world (just kidding - put me in my pulse tone world any time!)
OK, there are a couple of minor inconveniences, but nothing that would have stopped me from buying this unit:
- When you pick up the phone, you're liable to press one of the volume buttons on the side. When the phone is not in operation, these buttons change the ringer type and/or volume. The change only occurs if you press the volume button more than once. The only thing that happens if you press the button once is that the handset rings and you might think you have a call.
- The cover over the jack for the headset is not the easiest to open. Just keep picking at it ... you'll get it open.
- Mounted as a wall phone, sometimes it's not the easiest to hang up. I would like to have it beep when it's properly hung on the base.
I can't say enough about this unit. Once again, this is the finest cordless phone I have ever used! I would most defiantly recommend this unit to anyone old or young!
