When Nvidia came out with their G80 chipset, I don't think that most computer owners understood how popular they would become.
I was one of those people and just recently I picked up the evga 8800 320mb graphics card.
There are 3 models of 8800 cards; The gts, gtx, and ultra.
They range from $270 for a gts with 320megabytes of ram to $800 for an ultra with 768megabytes of ram.
The 320 version is a great deal, because it's just as fast as the 640 and really only starts to slow down at super high resolution, which most monitors don't even support anyhow!
In terms of speeds, an older 7300gt card would perform a benchmark of 2400 in 06-3dmarks (benchmark utility that measures 3d performance)
An 8800gts should run at 9300+ stock, the gtx around 11k, and ultra around 12-13k. I personally don't think the ultra supports the hefty price tag, but thats for a different review.
The speed is just truely insane on this card.
The Evga gts comes in a few models and this coming with the 500mhz processor and 1600mhz ram. Some of the other gts models are a little faster, but they are factory overclocked to those speeds, since all gts models use the exact same chip.
Evga also comes with a lifetime warranty, just in case the card dies or if you fry it and it overheats. The card does get very hot (60+ Degrees Celcius) so its really recommended to use a well cooled case. Also, the card is 9" long, so it may not fit in smaller cases.
It is recommended that you use at least a 500watt power supply, since this beast of a card sucks up about 200watts. Also, these cards can be run in sli (2 8800's running at once) and the speeds are almost 150-200%faster than a single card.. In order to accomplish sli, you must use an sli marked powersupply
The nvidia drivers are straight forward and are quite easy to install. There are constant updates on their website and evga technical support is truely top notch. The forums on their site is very good as well. If your card dies, the rma returns only take 1-2weeks to get you a new card.
The speeds of the games are ridiculous. I run every game at maximum settings at 60-150fps. Even the most demanding games run at closer to 60fps. I can't even imagine the speed of combining 2 of these in sli.
Good news is this card supports very large resolutions and has the cable for hdtv output on any hdtv television.
Imagine playing quake4 on a 55" plasma tv. Yes it's possible! It also comes with dvi adapter for any regular or digital monitor. It also supports dual monitors at the same time.
You may wonder why I haven't mentioned directx10 yet, well I'll tell you why. So far only 2 games are out under directx10 and they are barely better than directx9. So if this is the only reason you are buying this card, then you will be dissapointed. Actually so far, most benchmarks show very little noticeable visual difference between directx9 and 10, but in terms of speeds, the directx10 speeds are much slower.
I Really recommend this card or any 8800gts 320 card. It has the right amount of memory and an incredible amount of speed for all those wonderful 3d games out right now. It's basically equivalent in speed to a ps3 or xbox 360, so you will be blown away by the graphics
