$ 4 Xpansion - Too fast
Date of Review: May 15, 2007
The Bottom Line: Game speed wrecks any fun. Nothing new for the $$$$$.
I played the heck out of Red Alert C&C and I bought C&C Generals (at least my 8 year old likes it), so I thought I would try out their newest offering.
I have only played it for a few hours, but already I severely dislike it. I started out the campaign on Hard. Not sure what Medium or Easy is like as the first 4 or 5 mission on Hard is literally as hard as a cake walk is for an elementary student.
Then around the 5th or 6th mission, wham! But mostly because Fog of War makes it difficult to know where to go.
So far, the game moves WAY Too Fast. I play BF2, Quake, and other first person shooters and score in the top 10% regularly so I can play finger twitch games well. But this game just has way too much to do all at one time, so much so, that it is not even fun to play.
On single player vs Comp you can set the AI to different tactics. This game is all ready like playing against base rushers. I would hate to see what the AI is like if you set it to Base Rushers which is one of the 5 or so tactic settings.
I remember older Dos games ran faster or slower depending upon the CPU speed. Not that you have to worry about it, but taking that mind set, and I am on a P4 2.8 2gigs ram and x800PE, I would hate to see how fast this game is on a Core 2 Duo...
This game really needs a speed control. With out it, it is almost unplayable and not much fun. It moves way to fast to be able to keep track of all or even most aspects of the game. I like to be able to speed things up or slow them down.
Trying to build structures (add in the additional building queue), move out a force to take an objective, and defend or attack a base, and there is no way you can enjoy it. I really don't understand how they got to this end point?
Also, there is little difference in game play from C&C Red Alert to this game. It seems like a really expensive, $50, expansion.
So many people rave about the in game movies. First, Billy D Williams? I guess... Personally, since the acting is going to be passable at best just stick with the no name actors. Billy D just adds a sense of pathetic grasping to the movies. The commander is none so good either. Regardless, who really cares about the movies? The game is about playing and playing on line against others. So how valuable is a movie? I was fine with the Red Alert movie quality.
Graphics are good, not great.
Game play, other than speed is good, not great.
Story line thus far is really weak.
Not impressed at all. Should have bought Supreme Commander?
