Canon DC22 Review, Disappointment

by   kharin ,   Jun 4, 2007

Pros:  good outdoor video, dvd recording convenience on both sides of media

Cons:  zoom , no threads on camcorder for telephoto accessory, low light a problem

The Bottom Line:  avoid, if you want or buy, its not especially inspiring in most ways.

Overall Rating: 3/5 stars

Author's Review

This is 2 mega pixel dvd camcorder that is selling for as little as $289 or as high as $489 dollars. I think ultimately I was disappointed in this camcorder for two reasons: Indoor and low light way below average especially in very low light. Their own cheaper models zr500 and 800 with 1/6 chip did a better job incredibly enough in low light. Two, at 10x zoom they actually made the lens (no threads) where you couldn't add on a telephoto accessory which was the killer for me. Outdoor it took very good quality video : above average but its not exactly wow factor yet. The other factor is when the camocorder has enough light the cam video looks real looking; better then video quality of less chips in other cheaper camcorders. Still that real factor didn't happen enough for me to want to keep this and use insteand of the video look of their cheaper but more powerful zoom zr5 and 800 camcorder. So Your paying for an outdoor cam that does very well, yet you can't expand on what it does best by increasing the very modest zoom . Why Canon didn't include threads on what retails for over a $500 dollar camcorder, I have no idea but it was a mistake.. I rather get less quality video and better zoom if thats what these companies want you to compromise with. Its sometimes like a game with these companies, giving consumers one thing and taking away another. If thats the case I will take them back just as fast..

Ok about the focus, for this amount of money and for the size of larger 1/3 chip sensor, the lens size should have been bigger and it would have been nice to have a focus wheel up front. The size of lens does not maximize the larger chip.. another problem and thus focus was always a tad off to me except outdoors which was only fair. The same for the stabilizer, by making the camcorder light and small they give up the advantages of using this bigger chip so as you can tell the stabilizer was not that great..this camcorder was a Big disappointment to me.
The camcorder is suppose to be very small and light weight which it is, but that leaves the battery size too small to expand on.. another lesson in companies desire to give you the least options for the money. The unique small size of the battery leaves option for longer battery life missing. .
The ability to record on dvd media on both sides is a plus but all the other things mentioned previously was why I didn't like this.
