Product Review

A great little camcorder

by   profbevba ,   May 27, 2008

Pros:  Records on DVD or Memory Stick, easy to use, clear movies and sound

Cons:  Not recommended as a replacement for a still digital camera.

The Bottom Line:  I would recommend this camera because it is easy to use and gives you options on how you want to record movies.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I just purchased this camcorder after researching reviews on many camcorders and this one got the best reviews and lived up to them. The camera records movies on 1.4 GB DVDs including all types of DVD formats (-R, R, RW) and also uses a memory stick to record movies or still pictures. The accompanying booklet is extremely easy to follow and guides you through everything. I selected this camcorder because it had all of the options that I wanted: being able to record on DVD or memory stick, can take still photos, had a USB to download stills or movies to your computer, can playback on a television and can use the camcorder as a webcam.
My first try was to take a test movie using the DVD media. I was very impressed how easy it was to follow the instructions in the booklet and was even more impressed by the fact that it had a touch screen interface. The on-off-mode switch was a bit tiny and someone with big fingers could have a problem. I was able to record my test movie on the small DVD. To play it back in the computer using Windows Media Player, however, it was necessary to download the k-lite full codec package. Without a good codec like VLC or K-lite, it will not be able to play in Windows Media. The movie was extremely clear and the sound was impeccable. I assumed that there would be background noise from the DVD but that wasn't the case.
The still picture is recognizable but certainly not as clear as a 5.0 megapixels since it only shoots stills at 0.3 megapixels. If you are an avid still camera photographer, certainly you would not use this as your still camera. It is good for quick shots when there is no camera available. It is analogous to taking a picture with a cell phone.
The camcorder comes with software called the Sony Picture Utility and Picture Motion Browser. I have not tried this yet but it is intended for movies and stills that are downloaded into the computer from the camera via the usb cable.
All in all, it seems to be a perfect camcorder for anyone given all of the options for recording movies. This camera can use ANY 1.4 GB small DVD and ANY memory DUO stick. The DVDs with the SONY name on it cost about $24 for 5. I bought the Panasonic brand (5 in a pack) for $8.97. The SONY memory stick 2GB was about $49.00 in Best Buy. I bought a Lexmar 2GB for $29.99 (both purchases at Walmart).
Although I have not tried all of the features, the basic camera seems to be excellent and I expect all of the features to work as well.
