Bad guys are more fun

Pros:  Great action, interesting characters

Cons:  a bit dark... this can be good, but it's not for the wee ones.

The Bottom Line:  Try this because it's interesting. Try this because you're suffering Post-Harry Potter Syndrome. Just try it!

Author's Review

As a seller of children's books, i'm highly recommending Artemis Fowl to those suffering from Post-Harry Potter Withdrawl. As a friend of mine described, "it's Harry meets Die Hard."
A 12-year old Artemis is plotting domination on a global scale. He's able to do this thanks to a missing father, a looney mother, and plenty of cash at his disposal. At his side is Butler, who is from a long line of Butlers, adept at serving as well as protecting Artemis from any harm.
Still, world domination doesn't come easily. He abducts a fairy named Holly and steals her copy of the Book, which will enable him to exploit the magic folk for piles of dough.
Holly's no old-fashioned fairy. She is, in fact, a member of the LEPrechon Unit, and soon a race against time, trolls, and large explosives ensues in order to save her & keep their race under wraps.

I thought this book was very engaging and very well-written. Wonderful characters abound, and the fairy technology (yes, technology) was fun to read about.

I would be remiss to try to compare this with Harry Potter, because they are truly different beasts, so to speak. Artemis is not a good boy. He has compassionate moments, but his drive and ambition lead him on.
That's why everyone should try Artemis: the bad guys are always much more interesting.
