great animated film for the whole family

The Bottom Line: I can't think of a reason why you shouldn't watch this movie
If you're a NASCAR fan, a car buff, or have enjoyed Disney/Pixar movies previously, you don't need to read on. On the other hand, if you need some persuasion, this movie works on all levels. It's a predictable Disney tale, but the characters are so well-written, the animation so skillful, and the voice acting so good, that you can't help but being drawn into the story.
First off, grown-ups, you do not need a kid by your side to enjoy this! Naturally, the converse is actually true. To the great credit of the filmmakers, they have made the movie work for both audiences.
If you aren't nostalgic now for the glory days of Route 66, you just may be after watching this film. Most of the plot occurs in the town of Radiator Springs. It's location is not specified, but appears to be in the Mojave desert of Arizona or California. The landscape scenes are just gorgeous - real works of arts in themselves.
Most of the car characters are male, probably because it's easy to make a car seem masculine with the roar of an engine. Bonnie Hunt, with her impossibly cute voice, does a great job as the love interest of Lightning McQueen, played by Owen Wilson. Larry the Cable Guy is hilarious as Tow Mater. Racing legend Richard Petty has a small part. Paul Newman is the older "wise car" of the story.
A solid lesson on friendship and loyalty is an added bonus for young viewers. They will be delighted in seeing how cars live in the world this movie creates.
Do not stop watching when the closing credits roll. Some of the biggest laughs will come at that time.
