Lewis has always written profoundly, but where Narnia gave us a picture of Jesus OOTSP gives us a picture of the world. It's hard to say if he was immensely imaginative or truly inspired. While Weston's character is rather flat (evil usually is) he rather convincingly represents exactly what is wrong with the world today. And it was written nearly...I don't even know how long ago.
The most endearing aspect of the story is Ransom's patience and desire to learn, assimilate, and build relationships with his new friends on Malacandra. When Ransom loses a Martian friend the hurt feels very real.
Lewis has a knack for describing, visually, what an alien world would look like to someone who had found himself kidnapped and taken there as a sacrifice. At first, the descriptions portray the disorientation and total "where the heck am I" image, but as Ransom begins to understand the environment the reader can finally get a clear picture of the wildlife and vegetation on Malacandra.
The spiritual picture drawn by Lewis is incredibly significant, which shouldn't come as any surprise to admirers of his work.
All in all Out of the Silent Planet is a wonderful, scary look at what might be, or what might have been. If you haven't read it, stop reading this a go read it.
