Silence is not always golden.

by   dizzybint ,  Nov 10, 2004
Pros: Very descriptive, wonderful characters, it's C.S. Lewis.
Cons: The religious tone may be a con to some.
The Bottom Line: The bottom line should be silenced permanently.
Review: Are we alone in the universe? Is there a spiritual realm that eye cannot see nor ear cannot hear? Some believe they know the answer to one or both of these questions. For others, those questions are foolish to even ask. The science fiction trilogy penned ...

Out Of The Silent Planet, On Towards Good Reading

by   consumingfiyah ,  May 2, 2006
Pros: Lewis is master of description and weaves highly spiritual issues into well written story...
Cons: It's a little short, and can be slow moving at times.
The Bottom Line: A must have for any fan of C.S. Lewis, and an excellent science fiction novel with deeper meanings.
Review: Where does one start with C.S Lewis, arguably one of Christiandom's most famous and prolific authors? From The Chronicles Of Narnia to Mere Christianity, Lewis has been one of the most influential writers of the past century, but some of ...

An utterly fascinating, nearly timeless novel

by   s_trimble ,  Jun 20, 2000
Pros: Amazing story; articulate and prophetic moral messages; incredible dialogue
Cons: Style may be difficult for some; perhaps a bit dated
Review: When I first attempted to read C.S. Lewis' science fiction novel Out of the Silent Planet, I put it down after reading only a chapter or two. I was put off by the pure British-ness of the language, the relative slowness of the plot, even the use...

Narnia for Adults?

by   canuckster1127 ,  May 19, 2009
Pros: Imaginative, philisophical and thought provoking
Cons: Some may find the religious overtones slightly overbearing
The Bottom Line: Original sin and spiritual naivety abound. It's written well enough that anyone can enjoy the book on its own merits, whether looking for these underlying themes or not.
Review: CS Lewis was a tremendously diverse and engaging writer. Apart from being the most celebrated modern apologist for the Christian Faith, Lewis brought to the table a very sophisticated appreciation and understanding of great literature. Out of the ...

The First of Three

by   knowthis ,  Nov 19, 2000
Pros: A C.S. Lewis classic
Cons: It's very difficult to find others who've read it
Review: "Out of the Silent Planet" is the first book in a space trilogy written by C.S. Lewis, who is perhaps better know for "The Chronicles of Narnia." In a time of extreme interest in space movies ("Mission to Mars, Red Planet"...

Are Martians Christians?

by   JediKermit , top reviewer in Books at Epinions.com ,  Apr 15, 2002
Pros: Exqisite sci-fi settings from the creator of Narnia--wonderful allegory
Cons: Story/adventure doesn't flow as well as Lewis' later works
The Bottom Line: C.S. Lewis is a master of allegory--here he turns his considerable talent loose on Mars.
Review: For my entire adult religious life, I've been confronted by well-meaning (I assume) people who want to tell me that I'm not Christian. I'm not Christian, I'm going to burn forever, yada yada yada, because I'm a Mormon, or more officially, a member of...

Out of the Silent Planet -- A Lesson in Morality?

by   poseidon ,  Apr 20, 2000
Pros: C S Lewis, need I say more?
Cons: First in a Three-Part Series
Review: The author C. S. Lewis is arguably one of the more fascinating writers of the 20th century. He has lead an interesting life, starting out as an atheist until 1929 when he accepted the idea of the existence of a Supreme Being and in 1931 when he became a...

This Silence is Golden

by   sweaver ,  Aug 5, 2000
Pros: Well-told tale of another world.
Cons: Parts of it move slowly
Review: A University professor on holiday (a walkabout, you might call it) is kidnapped by two men, and regains consciousness to find himself in a strange craft, with an otherworldly light all around him. Upon further investigation, he finds himself in a...

Hnau of the world UNITE!

by   titolee ,  Mar 6, 2007
Pros: Great visuals, story is exciting and fast-paced, allegory at it's finest.
Cons: Characters are a little flat, writing seems unpolished at times, too short.
The Bottom Line: If you are a fan of pop science fiction, I wouldn't recommend this book. If you understand Lewis' world view, and agree with it, you will love this book.
Review: Lewis has always written profoundly, but where Narnia gave us a picture of Jesus OOTSP gives us a picture of the world. It's hard to say if he was immensely imaginative or truly inspired. While Weston's character is rather flat (evil usually is) he ...

The Old Testament, by C.S. Lewis

by   Sierra_22 ,  Jun 16, 2000
Pros: An older version of Narnia, complete with theological issues.
Cons: Some descriptions can be slightly dry.
Review: Lewis once again uses his superb writing skills to tell a Christian story, give a lesson in morality, whatever you want to call it, by transporting us to a fantastical world. Only, this time, it's not by way of wardrobe, there are no children and no...
