Perhaps the Greatest War Novel of All Time

When I first came upon Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls, I was surprised how much of a better writer Hemingway had developed into as compared to his previous works, A Farewell To Arms and The Sun Also Rises.

His prose is the most beautiful I've seen in many years. If you have the chance, pick this book up. His ability to describe such simple things as a bridge or a river is unprecedented and not matched since his death in 1961.

But the most remarkable thing about his prose is its simplicity. He manages to use the fewest words and display the greatest splendor ever seen in literature.
