The Sun Also Rises... and a true artist along with it

by   storyteller85 ,  Aug 1, 2003
Pros: Everything! The title... The storyline... The length... It's all just amazingly breathtaking!
Cons: Absolutely None. The finest Hemingway book ever written.
The Bottom Line: A highly-recommended book even if you're not a Hemingway fan. This book shall teach you the banes of over-indulgence and dissipation through crisp writing.
Review: Seldom does a novel emerge that is both powerful in its deliverance of the moral convictions being heretofore stressed by the author and at the same time written with such passion, with such finesse and delicacy that you could actually “taste”...

A 20th century masterpiece!

by   peppyj716 ,  Jan 4, 2002
Pros: Hemingway's writing style, exciting and unpredictable characters
Cons: It's perfect!
The Bottom Line: A masterpiece and a great introduction to the works of Ernest Hemingway. Also, a great novel about the post-WWI. experience.
Review: Hemingway is a really intriguing author, which is evident even in his early work "The Sun Also Rises."

What I especially like about Hemingway is his writing style. It is so simple, and he uses so many short sentences, yet at the same time,...

The Lost Generation never dies.

by   cardanykissy ,  Jun 9, 2003
Pros: True representation of the Lost Generation; very deep in meanings.
Cons: Slow developments in plot.
The Bottom Line: I cannot guarantee that everyone will like this book, but if you're into the books about realism, this is perfect for you.
Review: As a 20th century American novel fan, I have not found a book that represents the Lost Generation in ...

The Sun Also Rises

by   black5 ,  Mar 5, 2003
Pros: Hemingway uses simple language and a lot of dialog making it a fast read.
Cons: There is so much drinking it can make you queasy.
The Bottom Line: Hemingway is a master storyteller. The Sun Also Rises depicts a group of people from another era, but their story is human and timeless.
Review: This book turned me into a Hemingway fan. The story conveys the atmosphere of the era and compelling characters who have depth and human flaws. The Spanish setting is described in all its vividness and beauty. His dialog is cryptic and fast-paced, and...

Shotgun Shells Leave a Bad Aftertaste

by   jbauguss ,  Mar 18, 2000
Pros: It only hurts for a moment
Cons: Morticians charge extra for gaping shotgun wounds
Review: Time passes and the seasons change and you look so beautiful right now on your clay earth, and you are waiting for your time to come. Soon, friend, soon it will come and you will be up here with me, with me and the great Dimaggio, who has not been able...

Falling in love... with love

by   solace6 ,  Apr 19, 2000
Pros: everything lives and breaths
Cons: it ends
Review: This phenomenal book stole my heart. The main character, Jake caught me and rendered me helpless like only REAL men in REAL life could during his first taxi ride when he talks to Brett. Hemingway's writing style in general far surpasses anything I've...

A fine wine of a life

by   gmak20 ,  Apr 22, 2001
Pros: Pleasantly written, the theme works itself right in, a delightful story to read
Cons: Sometimes repetitive and misleading
The Bottom Line: I love all books, and this was one of them. Read it to be fascinated and read it for the fine taste of wine.
Review: This novel takes place during the mid 1920's and shows the society in France and Spain. The characters wonderfully portrayed the values and commitments of that lost society. In the novel the characters drank like crazy and spent the rest of their time...

clean and lovely

by   morela10 ,  Jun 25, 2000
Pros: lovely
Cons: it's Hemingway...it is sad.
Review: "The Sun Also Rises," by Ernest Hemingway, is simple and spare and marvelous. The tale of a doomed relationship between a World War I veteran, Jake Barnes, and the Lady Brett Ashley, it's as telling a portrait of a personality as any you'll...

Literary Gem

Pros: beautifully written; fascinating symbolism and conflict
Cons: only cons to those who need a lot of action to keep them interested
Review: The Sun Also Rises is an outstanding novel about the post-WWI "Lost Generation." The plot follows a group of American and British acquaintances from Paris to Pamplona and part way back. I think some readers will absolutely love this book, while...
