Author's Review
The youngest member of the platinum cash money hot boys is Lil Wayne. Although the youngest, Wayne is perhaps the most talented of all. On his first effort Wayne produced the platinum album, "Tha Block is Hot", which broke him into stardom. Along with me, alot of critics agreed that Wayne is most likely to be the next big superstar of the rap game. Will his sophmore album be lights out, or lights on?
Lil Wayne's sophmore effort for Cash Money is called " Lights Out", but it should be appropriately called Lights on. After listening to the album, it is apparent that Wayne didn't hold back the expressions, and language which he was forced to on his debut album. Yes, its official he is 17. Lets just put it this way, Lil Wayne's "Lights Out", is equivelant to fellow Hot Boy member Juve's sophmore effort "400 degreez". The quadruple platinum success of Juve's album broke cash money into the game, while "Lights Out" is going to break Wayne into serious stardom.
Wayne raps with alot of expression from his heart, and feelings which you can tell, as you listen to him rap to Fresh's sizzling tracks. The best track on the CD is "Everything", which is basically a tribute to the memory of Wayne's passed away father. Everything isn't the only one that shows Wayne's feelings however. "Grown Man" is another track, in which the lil one rhymes about how hard it is to be on his own, but how he will come through, because he is a grown man.
Not all of Lil Wayne's album's expresses touchy feelings, as always on every cash money album, you have to shine a little. Along with the Hot Boys, on the track "Shine", the cash money crew gets there must needed point across on how everything they touch is platinum. This song however isn't only about them shining, its about the tight beat which is produced by fresh that'll make 'em bounce for sure! Another great one produced by fresh on this album is "Break Me Off". Wayne, along with Fresh rap about the girl that they like and need, while unplugged does the catchy chorus.
If your looking for something to bounce to, and party with you will find it in the hottest track " Act a A--". B.G. and Wayne take turns on the mic as they produce rhymes similar to Juvenile's big hit " Back that thang up". These are just some of the tracks on Lights Out that will set your stereo on fire, other standout ones are " Lets Go", which includes the numba one stunna, Bryan Baby Williams. Also another hot one is "Wish You Would",where Wayne repeats that he wishes the people would try step up to him, so they can see what will happen.
Although most of "Lights Out" is filled with A+ tracks, some of the album only seems "halfway there". It would be a masterpiece, but Lights Out has some holes, and although they are little, they are evident. On some songs such as "On The Grind", and "Hit u Up", the beats, lyrics, and chorus fall short of making the song attractive. Unfortunately these tracks ruin the perfect game that Wayne Could've had on his sophmore effort.
Overall Lights Out gets two thumbs up. Again, Wayne doesn't get the perfect game, but he does get the job done. Apart from most Cash Money CDs, Lights Out isn't only an album that will make you bounce, it is a CD that will entertain you as Lil Wayne expresses feelings about his past. Mark my words, Lil Wayne will be the next big star on the rap scene after this album goes through everyone's stereos. "Lights Out" contains so much energy, that it will literally make your lights go out.
