It's Lost On Me

by   disinclined , top reviewer in Books at Epinions.com ,  Oct 28, 2002
Pros: Gregory Maguire is a great writer. Honestly. Don't judge from this.
Cons: A dark, chaotic mess and a thoroughly unlikeable heroine. Ugh.
The Bottom Line: This is no Wicked, I'm sorry to say. Let's hope Maguire's next effort makes more sense and features a protagonist that readers can stand.
Review: Not being much of a team player by nature, I don't see much point in book groups, and have successfully avoided them so far, except to snort scornfully at the lists of questions now included at the back of books to spark tongue-tied readers into...

A Failed Literary Leap

by   Alena ,  Sep 24, 2006
Pros: Gives you something to think about
Cons: Not entertaining, heroine not all that likable.
The Bottom Line: Its good for a group discussion but not much else.
Review: I haven't read any of Maguire's other books. And in fact I only read this one because I am participating in a book discussion group this semester. Luckily (I guess) for me I forgot about the discussion group until 2 days before and had to read this ...

I Was Lost in Lost

by   twobsmith ,  May 30, 2003
Pros: You'll love his other books
Cons: Storyline is very confusing.
The Bottom Line: Very confusing and longwinded. Stick to Maguire's first 2 books for his true style. This really had nothing to do with Scrooge.
Review: Ok, Wicked, loved it. Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, loved it. Lost, I have no idea if I liked it or not. Probably not. I am intrigued by Maguire's concepts, going one step further than the original fairy tale went. So, when I read the concept for...

Lost: talented writer of fairy tales. Reward for safe return.

by   drvon ,  Feb 17, 2005
Pros: Preview of Mirror Mirror at the end of the book.
Cons: London weeps because this story was set within its limits.
The Bottom Line: Lost: your time, money, will to read, respect for the author, belief in fiction as a medium, affection for London, self respect.
Review: Page 242. That’s the page I was reading the first time the protagonist said anything I could identify with and understand. She said, “You have no business liking me, you don’t even know me. No one who knows me likes me anymore”. ...

Don't bother if you loved "Wicked"

by   crypticmerle ,  May 27, 2002
Pros: None.
Cons: Very dark with no trace of humor. Maguire doesn't use own successful formula.
The Bottom Line: I should have just stopped reading it. I won't get my time back, but I can sell my copy on Amazon.com.
Review: I started reading Mr. Maguire's work with "Wicked" and followed it up with "Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister." I loved the premise of the alternate side of fairytales and had high hopes for "Lost."

I began to read "Lost" and quickly got...
