I used to think that Yamaha could do no wrong. I have a Yamaha Natural Sound tape deck from 1983 that works as good today as it did then. I had a Yamaha receiver in the 90's that was unstoppable.
So, I bought the Yamaha Natural Sound DV-S5950 DVD player, thinking that I could upconvert until Blu-Ray (or whatever format wins) is under $150. Sadly, Yamaha is just not what it used to be.
At less than a year old, the coaxial audio no longer works - at all, and the HDMI randomly shifts out one color. It is SO annoying to be watching a great DVD, only to have the picture go to only red and cyan (or whatever). The other night it went completely to black. Sure, I can pull the HDMI cable out of the back of the unit, then plug it in again, and the picture goes back to normal - it's still annoying!
I thought to myself, "has Japanese quality really suffered this much over the last two decades?" Decided to snoop around the unit a bit - "Made in China" right on the unit. Aaarrgh! Must everyone outsource?
This unit is headed for the 15-year old TV in the bedroom, and I am going shopping again...I wonder where Denon is made these days?
