Finally, just what I've been looking for!

by   markneustadt ,   Jul 31, 2005

Pros:  Convenient, great sound quality, really flexible

Cons:  The remote isn't a learning remote

The Bottom Line:  I am really satisfied with this purchase. The combination of features and quality makes this a "can't miss" purchase.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

Our TV is an HDTV unit. Our DVD player is a progressive scan media player which uses component cables. Our satellite dish uses S-Video and our old VCR uses regular composite cables. In and of itself, this setup is okay. It's just kind of a pain when switching things around because the TV is slow and the ergonomics aren't that great.

Our old receiver was just this old stereo unit. I have kept away from the home theater thing because I sort of thought the quality of these units would be sub-par.

Finally, I decided that enough was enough. I decided that I could get past any sound quality issues just for the convenience of being able to plug all these different devices into a single unit which would basically control everything. I considered a bunch of different units but finally settled on the HTR-5860.

The HTR-5860 has all the features I wanted. It has two component inputs and one output. It has a ton of S-Video and composite inputs too. The best part though is that it will convert all the input signals to component. This means that even that old VCR connected through the regular old RCA composite cable gets upconverted to the HDTV component output. It's not HDTV, but it's on the same signal path as the DVD player. It just means less fiddling around with inputs and outputs.

Plus, the sound quality is GREAT! I'm running a set of KEF Reference series 103/3 speakers. Wow. Compared with that old stereo unit I had, this Yamaha really is tight. I should have done this a long time ago.

When considering the convenience and quality of this unit, I wish I hadn't wasted so much time!
