Krista's Working Girl Opinion

The casting in “Working Girl” has a curious little twist to it. Sigourney Weaver plays the ideal demon-like fairy tale bad lady, and Melanie Griffith plays the ideal woman with some good ideas who no one will take seriously. But Harrison Ford, arguably the best actor of the three and the most famous, is badly cast as the businessman who’s having trouble getting ahead in this world. He played his part pretty well, but the part just wasn’t for him. A better underdog actor would have been someone like Kevin Bacon or Bill Murray, or maybe even Ed Harris. Nothing against the three actors I just listed, but Harrison Ford just doesn’t play the unsuccessful role very convincingly. He’s Indiana Jones and Jack Ryan for goodness sake! Alec Baldwin plays Griffith’s boyfriend for the first part of the movie. He’s one of my least favorite actors, but he’s perfect for this role as a sleazy guy.

The plot in “Working Girl” is an entertaining one. It’s in the same category of films as “Rocky” and “The Karate Kid” and “Major League”, where the underdog starts rising up really fast only to be shut down by a larger, meaner opponent, but something happens that saves the day and the underdog wins. It doesn’t have much social commentary to it, and it’s a little short on humor, but it’s entertaining enough for a Friday night.
