Released in September 2003, I actually was able to hold off on purchasing this latest release from the Wiggles for about 2 months. When I simply couldn't take watching our other Wiggles movies over and over again I headed to the local Wal-Mart to pick up
The Wiggles Space Dancing Animated Adventure on DVD.
The Wiggly, Wiggly Background
If you are not familiar with The Wiggles, they are a group of four Australian grown men with backgrounds in Early Childhood Education who sing and dance around and perform children's tunes. Each member of The Wiggles (Greg, Murray, Anthony, and Jeff) wears their own color (Yellow, Red, Blue, and Purple) and has a distinct performance personality. The Wiggles are joined by a few of their friends which include: a pirate (Captain Feathersword), a dog (Wags the Dog), a green dinosaur (Dorothy the Dinosaur), a purple octopus (Henry the Octopus) and a few other friends - which add to the fun. Their biggest appeal is the 6 and under crowd with a strong toddler contingent making up quite a large fanbase in Australia, US, and Canada. The Wiggles are a class act and enjoyed by the whole family, and they put on one heck of a live show. If you have a child who is 6 or under, I recommend you and your children check them out. You might just find you have a little Wiggler too. If you are curious to learn a bit more about The Wiggles, you can check out this
Wiggles Primer that explains more about who The Wiggles are, and why we love them so much.
About Wiggles Space Dancing
If you are familiar with other Wiggles movies this one is pretty different. In the past their videos have sometimes featured a single song done in computer generated graphics - such as
Caveland on the
Hoop-Dee-Doo! Wiggly Party movie. If you liked these animated songs, then chances are good you will like
Wiggles Space Dancing which is a full length animated feature.
Appropriate for children of all ages (and parents too),
Wiggles Space Dancing has a running time of 50 minutes not including the DVD extras.

Enter into one of Jeff's dreams -
Wiggles Space Dancing takes you on a journey with animated versions of
The Wiggles (They look like bobble heads) to outer space! When a spaceship from
Zeezap lands in Wiggles world, they climb aboard and accidentally take off into outerspace when the Captain wonders
What's this button for?. The first place they go is Planet Rock where the Wiggles perform
Eagle Rock with King Mondo (Ross Wilson). The second stop is Teeny Weeny Land where they dance a few jigs with wee-folks. Then, when trying to get back to earth their spaceship is hijacked to a place called Gloomy World. Of course, with the help of Captain Feathersword and The Wiggles they
dance the gloomies away and get the gloomies laughing again before
going home.
Our thoughts on Wiggles Space Dancing
My two year old son (almost 3) found
Wiggles Space Dancing to be instantly gripping. The movie opens up with the real life Wiggles trying to wake Jeff up and wondering about the contents of his dreams. They are employing methods of making funny faces to try to wake him up. Of course, this now has my preschooler making all sorts of funny faces but its all in good fun.
Once the Wiggles enter into the dream they are in computer animated format (look like bobbleheads). The animation is good, though the likeness of the character is slightly off making them seem a little on the creepy side. Particularly shocking are Anthony's glowing aquamarine eyes and Gregs super thick caterpillar eyebrows. I found them more disturbing than my son did, however.
Humor in
Wiggles Space Dancing is attempted but does fall a little flat. The exchange between the Zeezaps and the cows is downright bizarre... you'll have to see it to believe it. Fans of Anthony Wiggle will smile at the inclusion of Pasqua the dog in animated form and at the mocked up rock n roll posters on Planet Rock.
The storyline for this movie is very simple but appropriate for its intended audience consisting mostly of preschool age children. My son (age 2) is able to follow the story and doesn't bore of it. Younger children may not "get it" and older kids may think its on the lame side.
The music in
Wiggles Space Dancing is great, the tunes are catchy and my son gets right out of his seat and wiggles along with it. (Ok, I admit it - so do I). Our favorite song in
Wiggles Space Dancing is
What's this button for? which is led by Captain Feathersword, he is wondering what all the different buttons on the spaceship do. Our least favorite song happens to be
Eagle Rock with King Mondo, but even that song is growing on us with each additional viewing of the DVD (and with a 2 year old, we've seen this quite a few times now). The only thing that I wish is that there were more songs included instead of the small handful they did include.
