No Spots on My Glasses!
Date of Review: Jul 26, 2000
When my husband and I built the one and only home we've ever owned in 1981, our builder provided all Whirlpool appliances in our house. That included an electric stove, electric washer and dryer, refrigerator and dishwasher.
My Whirlpool stove still looks embarrassingly new, because I don't cook that often. But the washer and dryer, the fridge and the dishwasher all have constant, daily use. For the most part, they still look new and work perfectly after 19 years.
The Whirlpool dishwasher is the only appliance we've had to replace in all these years. We purchased this Quiet model about four years ago, so the model I write may be a little older than the one shown here. But they look identical and have the same description.
Our old Whirlpool cleaned perfectly, giving us spotless glassware, up to its last day on the job, but it had developed a leak that wouldn't have been practical to repair, so we bought another. Whirlpool has held up so well for us, we didn't think about any other brand.
This model is indeed quiet. My husband always complained that the old one made too much noise (it didn't bother me, but he didn't like for it to be running when he was home). But this Whirlpool still isn't quiet enough for him, either. He wants to run a load just before he leaves for the office for the day. I will run it anytime, it's quiet enough to talk on the kitchen phone while it's on.
You can reverse the front panels on this model from almond to black. There may be other choices available, but this was our choice. I like the black, it's sleek and modern looking, and it blends well with our other almond appliances.
If I'm going to be critical at all, it's that the racks aren't tall enough to put your typical cookie sheets in without a bit of a struggle. The spacers are just a bit too far apart for my tastes, so they aren't as good for holding single plates that are thinner or more delicate. While both the top and bottom racks are adjustable, I can't quite get the hang of getting both in the perfect position to make long stemware and baking sheets fit in the same load easily.
But the cleaning power is wonderful, I never have to touch up or re-polish any glassware, or chip away dried-on food after a washing. We have always used Cascade detergent, which may play a part in the sparkle as well.
My perfect dishwasher would be a bit taller, and maybe a bit wider. For my husband, he would be happy if the dishwasher was totally silent. Both those features would undoubtedly add to the price and require us to do some minor construction work in that part of the kitchen.
But overall, you can't go wrong with a Whirlpool dishwasher. My sister even bought the exact same model that I have when her dishwasher gave up.
You'll be happy with the reliability, quality, cleaning power and style of this or any other Whirlpool dishwasher you buy. I expect this one will last another 15 years.
