External Harddrive

Date of Review: Nov 9, 2007

The Bottom Line:  This is a very useful product, but if you just want more storage, you might be better off with an internal drive. I wish it had ethernet and firewire.
I originally bought the MyBook Essential ES (has ESATA connector as well) so that I could expand the HD DVR box that I was renting from Cox and be able to record hundreds more hours of movies and TV. I wasn't able to get it to connect up right to the DVR, and eventually just connected it to my computer.

Its nice having a portable 500gb disk to take to a friends house, or on vacation, or to the office.. instead of 100 dvds... I like the fact that it is USB and I can connect it to just about any computer (Mac, Linux, Windows.. no problem) and it is instantly recognized. You do have to be sure the operating system can read the file system, but as long as you choose fat32 it should be readable everywhere.

I had it connected as additional storage for a while, and I felt that it was a shame to not be using it as a portable drive. Its not quite as fast as my internal drives, but its not nearly as slow as burning a dvd.

I now have this hard drive connected to my router, which has a usb port that allows me to connect it. The router is made by asus and it does recognize the drive.
