The revenge of the geek...rockers
Date of Review: May 12, 2002
The Bottom Line: A must have for any music lover. The musically brilliant, emotional, and genre-defining Weezer rocks hard.
I?d like to start out with a comment that when Weezer started cranking out their music, I was there. However, in 1994, I was only 12 or so and I liked the soundtrack to the Little Mermaid more than anything else. So that?s not quite an option. However, getting a musically well-rounded base of judgment, I am able to finally understand Weezer and
what their music is all about.
Weezer?s first self-titled album is a real gem in the sea of many formula albums that are composed of the same repetitive material. The Blue Album?s honesty and sincere lyrics are what makes listeners relate to the music, (hey, we?ve all been geeks at times), and what makes them keep on listening. The CD is multifaceted and perpetually interesting, there is an excellent presence of variety and the songs are easy to access and understand. Like many individuals, this is the most listened CD in my collection.
Starting off the album with the rocking, "My Name is Jonas", Weezer flaunts their talent with excellent guitar riffs, emotional vocals, and unique lyrics. Moving quickly into the catchy, faster paced, "No One Else", Weezer brings in the predictable boy/girl material and makes it surprisingly interesting. Slightly slowing it down, "The World Has Turned and Left Me Here", the emotion flows through Rivers? voice and the lyrics are genuine.
One of my favorites on the album.
Moving on to the singles, the singles....what Weezer?s been often defined by, "Buddy Holly" and "The Sweater Song", are honestly incredibly catchy. Although the songs have been
panned by the long time fans at times, they are still quality.
"Surf-Wax America" picks it up after the leisurely "Sweater Song", displaying good song writing and interesting lyrics. "Say it Ain?t So" is packed with an overflow of emotion, simple but meaningful lyrics, and powerful subject matter. Another one of my personal favorites on the album. "In the Garage" defines it all, Weezer?s geek rock sound is in full force. Combining Weezer?s unique style with geek/rock lyrics, 'I?ve got a dungeon master?s guide...? "In the Garage" is another highlight of the album. Weezer switches between rock and melodic pop in the smooth ?Holiday?, a classic sounding Weezer song.
Closing the album with my favorite song of Weezer?s career, the 7-minute "Only In Dreams" is mesmerizing, perfectly blending beautiful lyrics, harmonious sounds, and a
well-done instrumental section.
Weezer?s Blue Album is simply amazing. It?s a must have for geeks, or just music lovers in general. I am honestly ecstatic that I?ve been lucky enough to listen to these 10 genius tracks. Without this CD, music would not have been the same for me.
