Author's Review
Not Your Typical Sandler
We all know Adam Sandler as the ex Saturday Night Live actor who has made it big in the movie business by portraying some odd and obnoxious characters. However if you are looking for an odd and obnoxious Sandler in this movie you wont find him. In this movie Sandlers character is surprisingly normal and low key. But even with out Sandlers regular oddball behavior you will still find some funny moments in this film, as goofiness is traded off for good strong comical lines.
Believe it or not this is actually my pick for the Most Romantic Valentines Movie Write Off. Why did I choose and Adam Sandler movie when there area so many romantic movies I could have picked? Because, I found this movie to be: absolutely adorable, funny, and very romantic.
I Can Relate
One of the things about this movie that made me giggle quite a bit was the fact that it was a movie thats events happened in the 1980s. Because the I was a teenager and young adult in the 80s I found it really easy to relate. And of course get a chuckle as I remembered some of the goofy things we did back then. Like how we dressed and what music we listened to. Not that I think it was bad. I still love a lot of the music of the 80s and I really loved the way I dressed back then. Blue eye shadow and big hair rules!
The Plot
Robbie (Sandler) is a wedding singer (different from the kind of wedding singer I am). He has all of these romantic notions and is anxiously awaiting his own up coming wedding.
Julia (Drew Barrymore) is a banquet waitress who of course waitresses at a banquet hall that Robbie frequently sings at. Julie and Robbie both have something in common. They are both getting married. Because the two of them work at the same place Robbie and Julia become friends.
Soon it is Robbies wedding day and he is dismayed to find that his fiancée Linda will not be walking down the aisle with him. She backs out of the wedding at the last minute. He is devastated.
Because of his friendship with Julia and his wedding knowledge, Julia asks him to help plan her wedding. She also sets Robbie up with her best friend (who most of the time dresses like the 80s Madonna). Through all of this contact with Julia he begins to realize two things, one Julias fiancée is a slime bag, and two he is developing feelings for her.
I dont want to ruin the movie for anyone so I will not tell you any more about the plot of this movie. What I will tell you though is that even though the ending of the movie is quite funny it is also one of my favorite romantic scenes of all time. Maybe I am goofy for thinking that but it actually brings a little tear to my eye every time I see it.
Conclusion
Weather you are a Sandler fan or not I think you will enjoy this movie. It has just enough humor to keep the guys interested and plenty of good clean romance to keep us gals happy. This is also for the most part a very nice clean wholesome movie. This would be a romantic movie that if you cant get a baby sitter on Valentines day that you could still cuddle up on the couch with your spouse and watch it while the kids play around you. Except for a couple of swear words and a guy in his skimpy underwear this is a clean movie.
I have to make mention of the side characters in this movie because a lot of the humor comes from them. I wont go into detail about each of them, but I am sure you will quickly know what I mean if you watch this movie.
Entertaining and Romantic you cant go wrong with this movie. And you will especially identify with it if you were a teenager or young adult in the 80s. If you were a teenager or young adult in the 90s you may just think we were all a bunch of dorks. But I think you will like the movie as well. This is a nice movie for all ages.
