Yes, I am afraid to admit it. The ending of this romantic comedy made me cry. But, then again I am a sap who always loves romantic movies and that is why I convinced my friend to rent this one. And, yes this movie isn't just romantic , it is also a comedy. (and they didn't charge us twice to rent this one)
I really enjoyed the Wedding Singer(1998). The movie takes place in the mid-80s and long haired Robbie Hart (Adam Sandler) is singing the hits from the 1980 as a wedding singer (check the cover of the box). His plans to be the lead singer of the next greatest rock band just didn't go through.
At the beginning of the movie, Robbie is preparing for his own wedding with Linda. However, Linda winds up leaving him at the altar after realizing that Robbie never became that cool rock star. This move really puts Robbie in a bitter and dismal mood. However, the movie must go on.
On the other hand, there is Julia (Drew Barrymore). She is a catering waitress at these weddings and also bar mitzvahs which Robbie sings at. She also is planning for a future wedding, and also she is engaged to the wrong person, Glenn. Glenn is really a jerk who doesn't care about Julia. He is too busy with his junk bonds, drinking, and being with other women. What great judgment these two have in choosing partner.
Right from the beginning, we know that these two (Julia and Robbie) are perfect for each other. The movie allows us to see that before the two characters do. However, what we don't know is how these two are going to get together. Or if they are at all. Robbie starts to become friendly with Julia and he is willing to help Julia make the arrangements for her wedding. Thus, they get to spend time with each other and a bond grows between the two. However, one thing after another seem to keep these two apart, even though they start liking each other.
Do these two get together at the end? I won't give away the ending, but it was the ending that made me cry. But, I am the sap who always cries during romantic movies. (lol).
I have seemed to neglected that this movie also is a comedy, and there are a lot of funny scenes. One of the funniest scenes is when Robbie goes over to give music lessons to an elderly lady, and she pays him with meatballs that she puts in her hands. There are so many funny scenes that I don't want to give them all away. Also, watch out for cameos by Billy Idol, Jon Lovitz and Kevin Nealon.
I like how both Sandler and Barrymore play their roles. Sandler is his usually funny and charming self, but I like how he also plays some of the scenes when he is bitter and upset. Barrymore is perfect at playing the innocent and cute Julia who doesn't know what she is getting herself into most of the time.
Lastly, the music in this movie is great. Well, it is great if you like music from the '80s. I love music from the '80s and enjoyed such songs as You Spin Me Around (Dead or Alive), Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic (Police), China Girl (David Bowie), and Holiday (Madonna). Everything in this movie is done to reflect the style of the '80s. The hairstyles and the clothing as well. If you didn't like that period in time, you may not like that aspect of the movie.
As for parents who have children, this one is fairly suited for all ages. There is some foul language and a couple scenes with sexually related material, but you won't be embarrassed watching this movie with a youngster. The rating of PG-13 is appropriate. People who like romantic comedies will enjoy this movie, and if you are looking for a date movie this is the one.
Thank you for reading this review.
