Product Review

Interesting, but too much repetition

by   bgunsberger ,   Jul 19, 2000

Pros:  Great examples, interesting premise

Cons:  Far too much repetition

Overall Rating: 2/5 stars

Author's Review

John W. Dower's 'War Without Mercy' deals with the premise that racism
played a major part in the conflict between the United States and Japan
during World War Two. Dower supports his argument by using examples
from the media, internal military documents, off-the-record
conversations and public commentary.

Unfortunately for the reader, Dower makes his point in the first twenty
pages and then spends the rest of the book restating it. Instead of
increasing the scope of his treatment, he simply piles on the examples
until I found myself skimming past page after page. Finally towards the
end of the book Dower changes tack and discusses Japanese post-war
plans, including some incredible exerts from mission statements and
planning documents.

Dower's research is impressive and he certainly presents examples of
every singe form of US-Japanese racism. After finishing the book, I
couldn't help feeling that his premise was too narrow for the book's
three hundred or so pages.

I'm glad I read this book, but couldn't face doing so again.
