Warning: Females May Get Drunk with Keanu Reeves
Date of Review: Jan 2, 2001
Keanu Reeves is once again perfectly cast here, as this film needs his good boy looks. My sister just happened to rent the video one lazy Saturday afternoon so I ended up watching the film with her and my mom who loves this kind of stuff. I loved it, too!
This film's texture has a romantic hue to it, it's like viewing the film in rose-tinted glasses, and so the Walk in the Clouds title is highly appropriate. If you're female, you might end up walking in the clouds before you even reach the movie's climactic part. Reeves never fails in the Prince Charming part, he never has.
He looks just perfect in those jumpers and khaki trousers, and that he pretends to be a chocolate salesman is one delicious twist. But the best part I think is the grape-crunching sequence where the entire village steps on the grape crushing tradition with much merry making. This is where the lovers fall in love, intoxicated with the alcohol in the grapes flying in the air--how charming!
Then as you sympathize with the lovers, you get to sympathize with the wine family after their plantation gets burned--such a tragedy, and so well played out. If you're a Keanu lover, of course, you shouldn't miss this one. If not, you will love this film if you are a romantic at heart.
