Author's Review
Being the first review I've written for Epinions, I thought "What was the BEST book I read in 1999?" One second later, the answer: Wait Till Next Year.
This book is Doris Kearns Goodwins' memoir of growing up Catholic, In Brooklyn, during the 1950's. It is interlaced with memories of her friends, her community(and how it was changing), and her family. Especially poignant is her relationship with her father. To Kearns Goodwin, Baseball was the common bond that tied her so closely with her Dad. As the 1950's wore on, her beloved Dodgers got old (and finally moved away), the neighborhood decayed, her father grew ill (and finally died). It was poignant seeing all important aspects of her childhood come to a gradual demise in only ten short years.
Do not be fooled into believing that this in any way a run-of-the-mill sports book. While the Brooklyn Dodgers are an integral part of the story, they merely canvas to the portrait of Kearns Goodwin's childhood. This book is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
