This works great

Date of Review: Jul 2, 2003

The Bottom Line:  It is simple, works great, and bounces well.
My beard was getting long and the batteries low in my old trimmer. I have had a battery powered Norelco beard trimmer for at least 6 years. It just wasn't "cutting it" anymore.

I stopped into the local Wal-mart today and spent my lunch hour carefully comparing the 5 or 6 different models on the shelf. They ranged in price from $15 to $65. Some had stands, some had bags, some had both. I couldn't tell the quality thru the plastic, but my eyes kept going to the Wahl. I was holding a Remington in my hand and then picked up the Wahl. It wasn't heavy, just heavier. It felt and looked more solid. It was the only one made in the USA. The actual model is a 9876-506. It is rechargeable, comes with a bag, comb, oil, cleaning brush, and several guides.

The USA thing was not my primary reason for buying it, but it helped. My old one had a stand, but with the rechargeable cord and my wifes anti-clutter philosophy, I decided it wasn't going to be "standing" around much anyway. The bag seemed more like reality.

I brought it home and after a short charge up, put it to work. What a difference from my old one. The trim guide locks into place and has clearly marked and solid settings. This unit is light, but has a solid feel. The head rotates 180 degrees so you don't have to be a contortionist to use it. The book says the blade unit is self sharpening. It also comes with a "jawline blender" and 2 close-trim attachments. I was able to do a good job with the basic regulator and my steady hand.

It reminds me of the razors my local barber uses. I'm not sure if his are made by Wahl, but this has the same feel and sound as the big boys do.

I know its solid because it fell out of my hand when I was going upstairs to tame my beastly beard. It fell at least 5 feet, followed by the charger unit. Even though it landed on carpeting, I had fears that I wouldn't get to try it out. To my relief, the Wahl survived the fall without a scratch. I'm not planing on droping it again, but my last trimmer has a broken battery cover from a similar mishap. Compost happens.

I will post a follow up after putting this thru some more paces. So far I'm delighted with my $24 trimmer.
