I have a collection of clippers. I generally buy Wahl trimmers because, well I CAN'T SEEM TO FIND ANY OTHER BRANDS IN MOST PLACES!
I bought the basic pro about 2 months ago. I have an easy head to shave. I keep my hair at one length, so theres nothing fancy needed.
These clippers come with 4 guides as most do.
#1 is set to 1/4 inch
#2 is 1/2 inch
#3 is 1 inch
#4 is 1 1/2 inches
Some sets come with a blending guide that looks just like the #1 but is tapered. I like this guide so that you don't have a very noticeable line where you changed guides or where you finished cutting.
This basic model has an adjustment lever. Some of the older Wahls don't have it. It is used for adjusting very short hair. Form nothing to about 1/16 inch. It comes in handy for blending. Perhaps that's why the eliminated the blending guide. I use it for the back of my neck, side burns, and around my ears.
The clippers come with oil and instructions. Don't lose either of them. It is very important to keep clipper blades oiled. This will keep you from getting your hair pulled, and will give you a nice even look. I oil mine every other time I use them. just a drop right on the blades is all it takes.
The instructions show you how to adjust the blades. It is not as easy as it seems. You set the 2 blades so that the teeth are uneven. If you set them wrong you wont cut well or maybe not at all. It is an art to keep those blades in alignment. You need to use a Phillips head driver to tighten or loosen the blades. I keep one in the bathroom because I have to adjust them so often.
The clipper motor and housing seem to hold up very well. It makes a ton of noise but the full size ones always do. The blades however are another story. If you keep them clean and oiled they will last about 30 hair cuts. Longer if you just use them to trim. To buy new blades it costs an incredible $15 !!! The whole thing only costs about $19. they are encouraging you to throw the thing away and buy a new one. I have a hard time even finding the replacement blades at all. They need to be ordered.
I hate throwing things away, especially when they still work. I just imagine how many clippers are sitting in our landfills. I wrote a letter to the company about the blade issue, but has yet to be answered. So I guess I will just keep my 6 clippers in a drawer untill I can find a use for them.
Otherwise, this is a good product. The cordless ones are such a more pleasant experience, but will only last about a year of charging.
Sears makes some good trimmers. Cordless ones for just light trimming for facial hair and sideburns etc. I think If that is all you are using it for, go for that. Sears takes everything back no matter how long you have have it. They don't like to advertise this but it is generally true.
