WWII: The Night of the Living Dead
Date of Review: Jun 13, 2001
The Bottom Line: Short game time, shoddy AI and horrible graphics do not a good game make.
WWII Normandy would seem like a decent game from the cover, along the premise of the Day of Defeat MOD for Half-Life. To a certain extent this perception is correct ? the game casts you as an allied infantryman with the 101st Airborne during Operation Overlord.
From there though, the similarities end.
Day of Defeat has excellent graphics, WWII Normandy?s graphics are dark and the Nazi troops appear to be zombies or some other undead creature, which is in line with their AI ? those looking for the squad tactics employed by the enemies in Half-Life (Itself three years old) will be sorely disappointed.
Day of Defeat is multi-player, WWII Normandy is not. Day of Defeat has an accurate and diverse armory, WWII Normandy has a machete, a pistol, a rifle, a machine gun, and a bazooka, the occasional grenade and satchel charge ? ho-hum. Even with this limited amount of weapons, the ballistics in the game are poor and it frequently takes several shots to bring an enemy down, acceptable but for the developer?s claim of ?realistic damage?.
The worst part for me though was the length of the game ? it?s incredibly short - along the lines of 4 hours, less for more experienced players, even for $20 I had expected a bit more. In the end, this game appears to be of the same ilk as Mortyr, beware.
