Don't expect 54mbps from the WRE54G

I bought a WRT54GSv4 router, which gave very good coverage to the far end of my house. But thinking I would like to boost the signal, I lashed out for a WRE54G range expander.

Afer a couple of hours of checking firmware versions, turning SSID back on, and some good support from Linksys, I got the expander working.

To my horror when I placed it at the other end of the house, yes, I was getting excellent coverage but I was getting dial-up speeds when browsing simple web pages.

After a bit of hunting in the Q&As on the Linksys site, I found that the WRE54G will cut your networks speed by at least half. So if its going out from your router at 54mbps, you can expect 22. I've turned it off now and, even though the signal is weaker I'm getting much better response times. They should be calling it the WRE22G. I'll be taking mine back for a refund.
