I had a problem figuring out what Mac address to use in the setup for unit. So I put in till I got the right one and the blue light stayed on when I saved the settings.
Next, when all finished and you have the unit programmed you have to go back to your orginal IP settings, obtain IP and all automatically or you wont be able to connect to the internet.
What I love about the unit is you can unplug the WRE54G and take it in another room, plug it in and the settings are saved and still there. It does not lost the programming, dont hit the button on the side though.
The connection is always excellent.
I use the WRE54G with a WRT54GS router wireless unit.
The minimum firmware of the router to connect with WRE54G is 2.07.1. Your firmware should be ready to talk with it. You have indicated the version of the WRE54G. If you have version 2, it would be easier to configure the device because it has an Ethernet port where a computer would be connected to access the utility of the Range Expander.
Please follow the procedure on how to configure the device using WRE54Gv1.
You need to have the wireless settings of the router first/ Copy also the MAC Address of the wireless by going to Status > Wireless mini tab.
To connect WRE54G, kindly try the following:
1. Assign an IP address on the computer that you are using.
Windows 9x and ME:
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network > Highlight the TCP/IP of the Wireless LAN card youre using > Properties
>>>Under IP Address TAB:
Specify an IP address: 192.168.1.105
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
>>>Click the GATEWAY TAB:
Under New Gateway: Enter 192.168.1.240
Then Hit Ok All the way out
hit yes if itll ask you to restart
Windows XP and 2000
Go to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Right Click Local Area Network Connection that you are using > Properties > Internet Protocol TCP/IP > Properties > Use the following IP address:
IP Address: 192.168.1.105
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.240
Then Hit Ok All the way out.
2. Ping WRE54G.
Click on [Start >Run>type command] then hit enter/return. The DOS prompt or a black screen should come out. On the blinking cursor type ping 192.168.1.240 then hit enter/return. You should get 4 replies or the ping statistics should be packet sent: 4, received: 4, lost: 0. If you can ping it,
3. Access Range Expander's Setup Page.
Launch your Internet Explorer 5 or later version or Netscape Navigator 4 or later version.
On the Address, Search or URL, type: http://192.168.1.240, then hit Enter/Return. A login screen will appear. Type admin for the password and leave the username blank or empty then hit OK.
4. Input the wireless settings you have on the router. Save it. WRE54G is already configured. Set TCP/IP properties of the computer back to its default settings. And it should work.
5. Turn off wireless computer, unplug WRE54G. Put WRE54G to a location where you are getting very weak signal. Plug in power cord of WRE54G, wait for the lights to be stable then turn on wireless computer. And it should work.
If you have WRE54Gv2, please use this instead:
1. From the WRE54Gv2's Ethernet port connect a cat-5 cable then connect the other end to the Ethernet port of the computer.
