Author's Review
I purchased this base unit and a couple extra handsets for my home after losing faith in the 2.4 panasonic phones that kept dying on me.
On first impression, the phone's looked very sleek and very ergonomic. Just to make sure I didn't screw up again, I followed the instructions to the "T" which means...and I can't stress this enough: CHARGE THE BATTERY AT LEAST 12 CONTINIOUS HOURS before even pushing 1 button or connecting it into the phone jack (as an incoming call will immediately reset the battery by use of phone's functions)!
Finally after about a day, I starting toying with them. The installation couldn't be easier, base auto recognizes its own handset and to register other handsets, you simply push a button.
Each handset is individually configurable which means it can have its own logos, wallpapers, sounds etc. Not bad for different rooms but if you want the same ringer on all the sets, you have to do them individually. Not bad for 2 or 3 sets, but if you have a large household, it can be a pain.
The phonebook and phonebook CD that comes with these is pretty basic. What I found negative is that if you copy 1 (call it the master handset)'s data into the phonebook on your computer and you transfer that phonebook onto other handsets (via USB), they only copy over the data, not the sounds or pictures! Which means, you have to configure EACH handset individually! Very annoying.
About the sound recording - it's ok but not great. You can only record on average the first 13 seconds of your favorite tune to a ringer. Again, each handset has to be done the exact same way or you get...thats right...a delay on ringing which means usually the base is the first to ring and the second delay in sending the signal to the other sets causes the ring to be off sync. Someting that annoys me, maybe not a big deal for large homes with sets spread far apart.
The speaker phone is good quality on base and handsets. The keys on the base are a little small and difficult for clumsy hands.
The menu is rather basic, similar to an early day Nokia cell phone, just color menus and basic images. You can upload your own pics which makes it neat to see who is calling. But again, each handset has to be individually customized.
It is important to also note that the base does ring on its own BUT it cannot be customized with rings nor does it have the preprogrammed polyphonic ringtones the handsets do so you basically have to turn it to quite mode if you plan to customize the handsets.
Also on the base of the main and auxilliary sets, there is a nice orange ring that lights up when it is charging...but it's not there when its not charging. Fine with me but in a dark room, you'd think they would have changed this to another color so you can see where the base is. I know it's a minor thing but thought I'd point it out.
All in all, it is a good phone system and very sleek looking. Very modern, no interference (like in the old 2.4 days when microwaves could interfere), nothing like that here.
