Author's Review
After checking out several whole room heater reviews here and at Consumer Reports, I saw the Vornado TVH500 rated highly by both. All the Vornado products seem to have a good following so I thought I would plunk down the $150 at Bed Bath and Beyond (they had tons of them). This heater is as good as advertised, which is more than I can say about most heaters you see. I purchased this heater to take the chill off an addition to our home which my elderly mother in-law lives. We had been using a heater that looked like a radiator and was oil filled. Although this heater is 1500 watts with a thermostat and 3 heater settings it didn’t seem to heat the back room(12 x 20)very well.
The TVH500 is solidly built and has a cool triangular shape. The LED screen on top is easy to use. It has 5 controls: mode(low/High/fan only) temp up, temp down, timer(up to 9hrs) and power, plus the soft blue glow helps serve as a night light. The front grill is warm to the touch at most and the fan is very quiet. The safety shutoffs work well, unit shuts off at about a 45 degree angle either direction. The temp shown on LED might be a degree or two high, but that’s not really an issue, I just set the heater a degree higher to start and go from there. The remote seems to have more quality than I read in earlier reviews, and the buttons are close to the format as the controls on the heater. I can change the temp from about 12 feet away, not that we use it for that, mostly to shut it on and off. When I first started unit up I figured I would get a funky smell but I didn’t notice any. The air temp about 118 to 120 degrees coming out of the heater. This seems lower than expected, but is actually a good thing. The air doesn’t immediately rise up to the ceiling, but gets pushed across the room where it is needed.
Since I have been using the TVH500 the room has soft heated feel. And the heater doesn’t run all the time. It’s about 15 degrees outside as I write this and the room is at an even 70 degrees. You can not hear the fan run; it doesn’t dry the air out either. At first I would check on the heater to see if it is running, it’s truly an amazing heater. Their web site states units are all American made, which I like. Needless to say I really like this unit and will get another when needed.
