horrible tires, terrible sat nav, blind spots are a bugger too
The Bottom Line:
Buy the car if you are looking for something nice, affordable, safe and with good reliability and safety. Compare to Audi A4 or BMW 330i

Author's Review
I have the AWD S40 with the turbo, and it is a great car. I agree with some of the comments from the other user about how Volvo is pretty much the only people to work on the car. There is so much stuff in the car that no one has ever seen, which makes it very cool. The downside to this is, you can not upgrade your stereo since it part of the cars computer system, and if you have any key problems (since it is all electronic) it becomes a nightmare.
the styling is great, though Volvo still needs a little bigger engine, even for the turbo.
This is my second S40, after a month of owning the first one, I was t-boned and the car was totaled, but the passengers and I were fine. No scratches, just a bit sore.
There are a few downsides to the car:
1. the blind spots are terrible. You just have to get used to it, then it is ok, but don't expect to see anything for a good month
2. the road noise in the cabin is quite bad from about 50mph and up, mostly due to the terrible tires the car comes with
3. The tires the car comes with, they just suck
4. the Volvo sat. nav system is a joke, but cool looking on the dash
5. too small if you have a family, not much room in the backseat
All in all, this is a great car. I would buy it again (as I did). The only things I have done are change the tires (to goodyear assurance triple treads. I also live in Colorado), spray painted the ugly exhaust that hangs below the back bumper (you can see it on the cars from about 20-30ft back) with some bbq black paint, and I use the Shell V-power gasoline. It yields the best mileage.
