Fun car, bad reliability
Date of Review: May 11, 2007
The Bottom Line: Bought this car used and wish I hadn't. Love the handling and look, but am afraid it will cost a fortune in problems. Buy this one new, not used.
I bought a used 2002 Jetta TDI 9 months ago and I love several things about it: the handling, the style, the ergonomic positioning of the inside controls - this is a fun car to drive. I HATE the fact that I have had numerous problems in the nine months that I have owned the car (granted, it WAS used when i bought it, but it came from a dealer that claimed it had been inspected thoroughly. It hadn't been, but that's another story!). I have had problems with interior plastic peeling, my mass airflow sensor quit, massive carbon buildup in the engine, I don't think the emergency release latch in the trunk works, my exhaust is currently acting a bit funny, I have never gotten more than 38 mpg despite a new transmission and a recently cleaned engine, and my radio no longer works as of three days ago, not to mention that the cup holder is in a really stupid place. My mother recently bought a used 2005 Passat TDI and at 30,000 miles she has had none of the problems I have heard about or experienced with the Jetta. Fun car, but unreliable. I wish I could say I'd buy another, but I really don't think I'll go with a VW - or at least a Jetta - again.
