Author's Review
With the gas prices on there rise here in the SF bay area, I decided it was time to get rid of my 19 mile per gallon sports car. It was time to move onto something a *little* more practical. The first thing I decided to do was write down what my needs were for a new car: Good gas mileage, more passenger space, ANY cargo space (remember I was driving a sportscar) and it still had to be fun to drive. I then figured out what my budget would be and lo and behold, there wasnt much choice.
I could have gone with a ford focus or a honda civic; but for some reason the VW golf was far more appealing. Perhaps something in it's aesthetic appealed to the designer in me, perhaps the handling appealed to the guy who drove a sportscar in for the test drive. Whatever it was, after test-driving the 2000 Golf, I was hooked.
I've had the car about 2 weeks now and I am incredibly happy with it. Surprisingly so, in fact. Having gone from a car with 225 HP to the 2.0 liter 115 HP Golf, I was not expecting the car to be so much fun to drive. And now, when I go up to San Francisco, parking is easier, and the turn radius is great. My one issue, if you could call it that, is that the car tends to be a tad noisy when I'm accelerating. Perhaps its the tires, but more likely its that poor 2.0 straining under my driving. Should I have gotten the 1.8T? Maybe, but I've always been suspect of turbos and their maintenence. I think I'll just use some dynamatting and muffle the sound.
Overall I'm very happy with my new car. I think I will be for quite some time.
